Chinese gaming industry expands global footprint with international awards

The Chinese gaming industry is demonstrating increased competitiveness in the global market, highlighted by recent international accolades and successful overseas expansions.

Eclipse Edge Studio’s action-adventure game, “Tides of Annihilation,” recently won the “Most Epic Game” award at Gamescom, marking a significant milestone for Chinese developers. The studio’s co-CEO, Chen Qi, noted that the team sought to reinterpret Western mythology through a Chinese perspective, emphasizing cultural respect to appeal to global audiences.

Similarly, Kuro Games has seen significant international success with its title “Wuthering Waves,” which won the “Players' Voice” award at The Game Awards 2025. Liu Sheng, founder of Kuro Games, reported that overseas active users account for approximately 40% of their player base, primarily located in Japan, South Korea, Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia.

Industry leaders suggest that the Greater Bay Area, particularly Guangdong, serves as a major hub for this growth, with the province's gaming industry revenue exceeding 283.6 billion yuan in 2025. The trend reflects a shift from Chinese companies merely utilizing foreign platforms to developing their own high-quality, original intellectual properties for a global audience.
