China gene‑editing trial kills 6‑year‑old girl
A six‑year‑old Chinese girl, identified only by the pseudonym “Mei”, died in March 2025 after receiving an experimental brain‑targeted gene‑editing therapy. The treatment was administered as an intrathecal infusion of adeno‑associated virus vectors carrying a base‑editing tool, intended to correct a rare neurodevelopmental mutation (Snijders Blok‑Campeau syndrome).
The trial was conducted at Shanghai Xinhua Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and was led by neuroscientist Zilong Qiu. Mei’s parents contributed roughly US$800,000–US$860,000 to fund the therapy. Within a week of the infusion she suffered a severe immune reaction and died.
Following the death, Shanghai Jiao Tong University created a special investigation team, condemned the breach of research ethics, and announced “severe measures” pending the inquiry. The hospital was fined 24,000 yuan (about US$3,500) for regulatory violations. The case has sparked international debate over the safety and ethical oversight of gene‑editing therapies.
