Chinese industrial expansion challenges European manufacturing core

Chinese industrial expansion is increasingly challenging the core of the European economy, particularly in high-value sectors like machinery and transport equipment. A study by the European Central Bank indicates that Chinese exports are becoming more similar to European exports, creating direct competition with Germany’s specialized industrial base.

In the automotive sector, BMW CEO Milan Nedeljkovic has expressed concerns regarding the pricing of Chinese-made models entering the European market. Rather than calling for new tariffs or trade barriers, Nedeljkovic suggests that direct political dialogue with Beijing is preferable to avoid a trade war. He proposes seeking voluntary agreements to establish fair market competition standards.

The tension is driven by China’s massive economies of scale, integrated supply chains, and domestic battery production. While EU trade policies have limited the influx of Chinese electric vehicles, the structural shift in competition remains a significant challenge for European manufacturers who have seen their exports to China decline since 2019.
