Chinese insurance companies accelerate capital increases to bolster solvency
Chinese insurance companies are accelerating capital increases to bolster solvency amid low interest rates and rising equity holdings. Recently, Guobao Life Insurance and CMG Renhe Life Insurance disclosed plans to raise over 5.7 billion yuan combined.
Guobao Life Insurance plans to raise 3.075 billion yuan through new shareholders, while CMG Renhe Life Insurance aims to raise 2.656 billion yuan, fully subscribed by China Merchants Financial Holding Co., Ltd. These moves follow a trend where 11 insurance companies have announced capital increases this year to improve solvency ratios.
Industry analysts note that stricter capital recognition standards and downward interest rate trends have pressured solvency levels. While average solvency ratios remain above regulatory minimums, some firms, including Huahui Life and Changsheng Life, have failed to meet standards, and others are approaching regulatory red lines. In response, the National Financial Regulatory Administration has released a draft amendment to the Insurance Law, proposing stricter measures for companies that violate prudent operation rules or jeopardize stability.
