Chinese Iron Flow Battery Achieves 6,000+ Cycles, Outlasting Lithium‑Ion
Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have demonstrated an alkaline all‑iron flow battery that can complete more than 6,000 charge‑discharge cycles without measurable capacity loss. The design uses bulky, highly charged anolyte molecules to suppress reversibility issues, ligand crossover and active‑species decomposition, delivering about 99.4 % round‑trip efficiency even at high current densities.
Because iron is abundant and inexpensive, the battery offers a low‑cost, intrinsically safe (aqueous) alternative to lithium‑ion chemistry for large‑scale renewable energy storage. Its long‑duration cycling makes it well suited for grid‑level solar and wind integration, potentially reducing reliance on costly lithium‑ion systems and improving the economics of clean‑energy deployments worldwide.
