Chinese media content expands globally via Netflix and US production models
Chinese film and television content is expanding globally through both traditional long-form series and emerging micro-short drama formats. The urban drama ‘Early Spring Brightness’ recently topped the Netflix daily charts in Brazil, marking the first time a Chinese series has reached number one in that region. The success is attributed to high-quality production standards, including the use of Hollywood-style ‘intimacy coordinators,’ and effective localization through Brazilian Portuguese dubbing.
Simultaneously, the Chinese micro-short drama model is establishing a physical production presence in the United States. This expansion involves more than just exporting stories; it includes implementing a complete production workflow characterized by vertical filming, rapid-fire pacing, and high-frequency plot twists. In Los Angeles, American directors and writers are adopting these Chinese narrative structures.
This shift is accompanied by a new commercial model in the U.S. market, utilizing pay-per-episode structures rather than traditional subscriptions. Market research indicates that monthly active users for micro-short dramas in the U.S. are projected to grow significantly, with revenue expected to reach approximately $1.5 billion by 2026. Major industry players, such as Fox Entertainment, have already begun planning large-scale vertical content productions to capitalize on this trend.
