Chinese MG Maker SAIC Motor begins building Europe's first EV plant in Galicia, Spain

SAIC Motor's MG brand announced plans to construct the first European electric‑vehicle manufacturing facility in Spain's north‑west Galicia region. The complex will be split between a logistics and industrial hub in As Pontes and an assembly line in Ferrol, with additional ancillary industries on site.

The project, budgeted at about €200 million, aims to produce up to 120,000 electric cars annually, with construction set to start in 2027 and operations slated for 2028. It is expected to create more than 2,300 jobs in the region.

Regional officials describe the plant as a strategic industrial project. María Jesús Lorenzana said, "This would involve advanced manufacturing technologies … and at least 70 % local production," highlighting compliance with EU requirements and the goal of mitigating tariff impacts on Chinese imports. The investment follows MG’s expanding European presence, which sold over 300,000 vehicles in Europe in 2025.
