Chinese military studying Ukraine war for tactical lessons

A report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) indicates that the Chinese military is closely studying the conflict in Ukraine to gain strategic, tactical, and operational insights. Analysts suggest that Beijing is observing Russian battlefield tactics and Ukraine’s successful strikes against Russian warships, airfields, and military installations to improve its own capabilities.

Experts note that while China has built massive military capabilities, it has not engaged in a hot war since 1979 and lacks modern battlefield experience. By studying Russia’s vulnerabilities—such as the difficulty of defending expensive equipment against inexpensive drones—Chinese planners may refine their approach to potential future conflicts, including a possible invasion of Taiwan.

Additionally, NATO reports that China has supported Russia’s war effort by providing dual-use technology, including industrial equipment, raw materials, and weapons components. Research into over 90 Chinese-language sources shows that Chinese analysts typically identify new battlefield tactics within four months, though full implementation can take a year or more.
