China's Military Uses US AI Models to Boost Defense Systems
A Reuters review of more than 80 Chinese academic papers and patent filings found that institutions linked to the People’s Liberation Army and other Chinese defence organisations are using outputs from leading U.S. artificial‑intelligence models, such as OpenAI’s GPT‑3.5 and Anthropic’s Claude, to train smaller, specialised domestic AI systems. The method, known as model distillation, lets researchers feed prompts to the large U.S. models, collect the responses and use those outputs to teach compact models that can run on Chinese hardware with far lower computing requirements.
The distilled models are being applied to a range of military functions, including autonomous drone navigation and target identification, cyber‑warfare tools, surveillance and tactical decision‑making. U.S. officials say the practice may breach export‑control rules and intellectual‑property rights, while Beijing rejects the accusations and characterises them as U.S. AI “hegemonism.” At the same time, China is reportedly drafting rules to limit foreign access to its own advanced AI models, and the United States is considering legislation to curb foreign use of controlled American technology via cloud services.
