Chinese motors reshape the electric bike market
The electric bike market is experiencing a shift driven by the rise of high-power propulsion systems manufactured in China. These new motors, such as those from Avinox, offer significant torque and wattage, challenging traditional European manufacturers to rethink their product strategies.
While increased power is a major commercial draw, experts note that higher wattage does not always equate to a better riding experience. Excessive power can increase weight, reduce agility, and alter the fundamental essence of cycling by making the motor feel more like a light motorcycle than a pedal-assist tool.
Despite these technical debates, Chinese-made components are making high-performance technology more accessible. For instance, brands like Megamo and Crussis are now offering e-bikes equipped with Avinox M2 motors—capable of up to 125 Nm of torque—at price points below 4,000 euros, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for high-power electric mountain biking.
