Chinese national denies military intelligence leak charges near Pyeongtaek US base
A Chinese national in his 40s has denied charges of collecting and leaking military intelligence near the Camp Humphreys US military base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, during his first trial.
The defendant, a former member of the Chinese People's Liberation Army special forces, is accused of operating a military goods shop near the base from November 2021 to May 2024. Prosecutors allege he collected sensitive information on 12 occasions, including data regarding the ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield’ (UFS) joint military exercises and command personnel information. It is further alleged that he transmitted some of this data to unidentified individuals via WeChat and photographed military vehicles and weapon movements inside the base.
During the hearing at the Suwon District Court Pyeongtaek Branch, the defendant admitted to photographing the base and sending photos of aircraft and helicopters to acquaintances in China, but claimed he had no intent to collect or leak military intelligence. He stated the photos were shared because his acquaintances were interested in military topics. He also denied illegal possession of imitation firearms, claiming the items were purchased at military events or auctions.
Investigations are also ongoing regarding a civilian employee accused of providing military information in exchange for gifts from the defendant. The defendant also addressed his history with the Chinese Communist Party, stating he joined in 2001 but voluntarily left in 2005.
