Chinese nationals acquitted in Trinidad child‑trafficking trial

Two Chinese nationals, Chang Bao Wang and Wei Liang Wu, were found not guilty of trafficking two Venezuelan children in Trinidad after a High Court judge ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the victims were minors. The trial was heard by Justice Kathy‑Ann Waterman‑Latchoo at the O’Meara Judicial Centre before a nine‑member jury.

The defence argued that without evidence establishing the ages of the alleged victims, the State could not meet its evidential burden. An application by prosecutors to amend the charges from child trafficking to general trafficking in persons was rejected. The men had been arrested in 2019 as part of a larger anti‑human‑trafficking operation.
