Chinese Nationals Linked to Cybercrime Allegedly Involved in Murder in Sri Lanka

A violent altercation involving Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka prompted authorities to investigate a suspected organized cyber‑fraud network operating from the island. The incident, initially seen as a simple brawl, has raised concerns about Sri Lanka being used as a hub for transnational online scams.

Separately, two Chinese suspects have been brought before an identification parade in Colombo Port City for the abduction and murder of fellow Chinese citizen Hao Song. Police say the three men were fishing near a bridge when they were attacked, restrained and one was abducted; the victim was later found dead with multiple stab wounds. Investigators allege all parties may be linked to cybercrime activities and are coordinating with Chinese officials, including discussions on repatriating the victim’s remains.

Sri Lankan law enforcement faces pressure to demonstrate control over such criminal networks while maintaining diplomatic ties with China amid ongoing economic recovery.
