Chinese port congestion disrupts Peruvian exports

Port congestion in the Chinese cities of Shanghai and Ningbo is causing significant maritime delays, impacting Peruvian exporters. According to the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute (Idexcam) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce, vessels are experiencing waiting times of up to two weeks for docking following a series of weather events.

Reliability for maritime services has dropped sharply, with only 21% of services in Shanghai and 34% in Ningbo meeting their scheduled itineraries. These delays pose a particular risk to Peruvian agro-exporters dealing in perishable goods such as avocados, blueberries, and grapes.

Given the scale of trade between the two nations, with Peruvian exports to China reaching US$33,455 million in 2025, the situation presents a major logistical challenge. The disruptions are expected to complicate maritime transport throughout October as delays cascade into subsequent service calls.
