Chinese researchers develop 2,400°C-tolerant tantalum alloy

Scientists led by Sun Jun at Xi'an Jiaotong University have created a new tantalum‑based alloy that retains its load‑bearing strength at temperatures up to 2,400 °C. The breakthrough, published in the journal Nature, shows that the alloy’s carefully engineered microscopic structure prevents the typical softening that occurs in most metals at extreme heat.

The high‑temperature performance could enable more efficient aerospace components, hypersonic vehicle structures, rocket nozzles, spacecraft thermal protection, advanced gas turbines and nuclear reactor parts. Commercial use will depend on proving the material’s durability over repeated heating cycles, resistance to oxidation and corrosion, and reducing the cost of tantalum production, which is presently expensive.
