Chinese shipyards secure 82.3% of global new order tonnage

Chinese shipyards secured 82.3% of the global new order tonnage during the first half of 2026. According to the China Shipbuilding Industry Association, new orders reached a total capacity of 121.06 million deadweight tons (DWT), representing a 173.1% increase compared to the same period the previous year.

This surge in orders, particularly for tankers, has been driven by several factors, including high freight rates, an aging global fleet, and the need to replace vessels to meet new emission regulations. Additionally, geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran have disrupted oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting shipowners to secure more vessels for longer maritime routes.

By the end of June 2026, the Chinese shipbuilding order book stood at 363.25 million DWT. The volume of new orders in the first six months of 2026 has already surpassed the total new orders recorded for the entire year of 2025.
