Chinese streamer diagnosed with liver fluke after eating raw fish

A Chinese mukbang streamer known as Zhu has reported a liver fluke infection after consuming raw freshwater fish 14 times within a single year. Zhu noted that her viewership increased significantly when she posted videos of eating raw fish, but the habit led to serious health complications.

After initial hospital visits and stool tests failed to detect parasites, a specialized clinic diagnosed the infection through blood antibody tests and CT scans. Doctors noted that liver fluke eggs are not always detectable in stool, which can lead to missed diagnoses. Zhu is currently undergoing medical treatment and has deleted all raw fish content from her channel, warning viewers about the risks of consuming uncooked freshwater fish.

Medical experts state that Clonorchis sinensis, the parasite responsible, infects over 15 million people globally. The infection is contracted by eating raw or undercooked freshwater fish and shrimp containing larvae. Common misconceptions, such as using mustard, soy sauce, vinegar, or alcohol to kill parasites, are ineffective; thorough cooking is the only reliable prevention method.
