Chinese vehicle reliability improves in 2026 J.D. Power study
The 2026 China Vehicle Dependability Study by J.D. Power indicates that Chinese automotive reliability is improving, though a gap remains between domestic and international brands. The average number of reported problems in the Chinese market fell to 192 per 100 vehicles (PP100), marking the first improvement since 2022.
Among domestic manufacturers, Chery led with the lowest score of 181 PP100, followed by FAW Hongqi and GAC Trumpchi, both at 186 PP100. When compared by segment, premium brands averaged 183 PP100, international mainstream brands averaged 191 PP100, and Chinese brands averaged 201 PP100.
The nature of vehicle issues is shifting. While powertrain-related failures decreased from 9.5% in 2022 to 6% in 2026, infotainment systems have become the most frequent source of problems, accounting for 15.9% of issues for the third consecutive year. Additionally, problems related to driver assistance systems rose to 8.6%.
