Yue opera actress Qian Shuiming dies in accidental drowning
Qian Shuiming, a 59-year-old veteran Yue opera actress, died following an accidental drowning while on a touring performance in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. On the night of October 11, after completing a performance in Xiaojiazhuang, Qian went to a nearby river to hand-wash her delicate silk stage costumes to ensure they were ready for the next day's show.
Local villagers discovered her body by the riverbank on the morning of October 12, next to an unfinished basin of laundry. Police investigations concluded that the death was an accident caused by slippery riverbanks, poor nighttime visibility, and physical exhaustion from continuous performances, ruling out foul play.
The incident has highlighted the difficult living and working conditions faced by performers in grassroots private opera troupes. Unlike state-funded troupes, these mobile groups often lack modern facilities, forcing actors to wash intricate, heavy costumes in makeshift outdoor settings. Many performers in these troupes face low income, lack of social security, and high physical strain while traveling between rural areas to perform.
