BYD launches Formula S models while exports rise after domestic sales slump
Chinese automaker BYD unveiled the Formula S family – a lift‑back and a GT‑style kombi – under its premium Denza sub‑brand. Both variants measure over 5 m in length, have a wheelbase of 2 960 mm and offer power outputs from 329 hp to a top‑end 666 hp AWD version, with claimed electric ranges of up to 900 km (CLTC). The models share a front‑end design with the recently shown Denza Z9S sport sedan, which features a 1 210 hp four‑motor set‑up and a top speed of 270 km/h. BYD also introduced the Dolphin G DM‑i hybrid for the European B‑segment, highlighting a 4.1 m length, a 12.8‑inch driver display and a 425‑litre boot.
In the first half of 2026 BYD’s domestic sales fell 45.9 % year‑on‑year, dropping to 795 700 units, while total global deliveries reached 1 808 511 vehicles. Export shipments rose sharply, with almost 789 400 passenger cars and pickups shipped abroad, offsetting the home‑market weakness. The broader Chinese auto market is seeing a record pace of new model launches, with about 650 models introduced or refreshed in the first six months – roughly four new vehicles per day – reflecting intense competition and rapid product cycles.
Together, these developments show BYD expanding its premium electric lineup and pursuing overseas growth as the Chinese market becomes increasingly saturated and fast‑changing.
