Chinmoy Krishna Das remains in custody despite new bail orders
Prominent Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das remains in custody despite being granted bail in two additional cases by the High Court in Dhaka. The bail, granted by a bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher, pertains to allegations of vandalism and obstructing police officers in Chattogram.
Although Das has secured bail in several cases, his release is blocked by other outstanding legal proceedings. Specifically, the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division has stayed a High Court order regarding his bail in a sedition case involving allegations of disrespecting the national flag. He also faces a trial in a murder case at the Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal concerning the death of a government prosecutor during protests following his initial arrest.
Das has been in custody since November 2024. His arrest and subsequent legal battles have drawn international attention, including criticism from the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) and expressions of concern from India regarding the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh.
