Chinook salmon return to Wells Gray Park for annual spawning run

Every autumn, between late August and September, Chinook salmon return to Wells Gray Park to complete a 600 km migration. The salmon travel from the Pacific Ocean through the Fraser, Thompson, North Thompson, and Clearwater Rivers to reach their birthplace in the Horseshoe area.

Approximately 4,000 Chinook salmon return annually to spawn. These fish, which can weigh up to 20 kg, navigate various rapids including the Kettle, Sabre Tooth, and Gatling Gorge. While many attempt to leap Bailey’s Chute, the falls are generally considered impassable for the species.
