Chios forest fire triggers emergency alerts in Viki area
A forest fire has broken out in the Viki area of Chios, Greece, spreading through difficult-to-access terrain. The emergency 112 alert system was activated to instruct local residents to remain on alert and follow official directions.
Firefighting efforts involve 35 firefighters, two hiking teams from the 13th EMODE, volunteers, and 11 vehicles. Aerial support includes two aircraft and three helicopters conducting water drops. While some improvement has been noted in the section of the front moving toward Mount Pelinaio, the fire remains uncontrolled in rugged forest areas.
The Local Operational Coordinating Body of Civil Protection was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to evaluate the situation and coordinate services.
