Chios Airport to close for four months for runway expansion

Omiros Airport on the Greek island of Chios will suspend all commercial flight operations for four months, from November 15, 2026, to March 15, 2027. The closure is necessary to facilitate a project for the extension and modernization of the runway and operational infrastructure.

The decision has sparked significant local opposition. The Chios Municipal Council unanimously passed a resolution protesting the closure, citing a lack of consultation and the heavy burden it places on residents, businesses, and the local economy. Residents expressed concerns that the island will be effectively cut off from the mainland, as travel to Athens by ferry can take up to eight hours, compared to a 50-minute flight.

Local officials, including Mayor Giannis Malafis, have criticized the timing and the lack of prior communication. While the airport will be closed to commercial traffic, it will remain available for helicopter use to facilitate medical evacuations and state operations. Airlines such as Sky Express have confirmed the suspension and noted that affected passengers will be notified via email.
