Chipotle opens first Asian restaurant in Gangnam, South Korea

Chipotle has opened its first store in Asia, located in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea. This expansion marks the first time the American Mexican fast-casual brand has entered an international market through a joint venture, partnering with Sangmidang Holdings' subsidiary, Big Byte Company, to form S&C Restaurant Holdings.

Rather than localizing the menu, the company aims to replicate its original US brand experience, including ingredient standards, cooking methods, and the customizable ordering system. All stores in Korea will be directly managed to ensure consistent quality. The company plans to open two additional locations in South Korea within the year and intends to expand into Singapore in the first half of next year, using the Korean supply chain and operational model as a blueprint for broader Asian growth.

To maintain quality, the company has focused heavily on establishing a supply chain that meets its strict standards. While many ingredients like cilantro, onions, rice, and sour cream are sourced locally in South Korea, the company is working to develop other staples like tortillas and sauces domestically.
