Chipotle Mexican Grill opens first restaurant in Mexico, eyes further growth
Chipotle Mexican Grill inaugurated its first outlet in Mexico on July 16, 2026, in San Pedro Garza García, part of the Monterrey metropolitan area in Nuevo León. The launch is being carried out through a development partnership with Alsea, a leading Latin‑American restaurant operator that also runs brands such as Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza and Chili’s.
Company CEO Scott Boatwright said, “We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country’s culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence.” The Monterrey site is intended as a proof‑of‑concept; Chipotle and Alsea plan additional locations in Nuevo León later this year and a rollout in Mexico City in 2027.
The opening follows Chipotle’s broader international expansion, which already includes more than 4,100 restaurants worldwide and recent entries into the Middle East and Asia. The firm aims to open between 350 and 370 new restaurants globally in 2026, part of its “Recipe for Growth” plan. Shares rose roughly 3‑4% after the announcement, reflecting investor optimism about the new market.
Analysts note the move revives a pattern of U.S. fast‑casual chains testing their concepts in the cuisines’ countries of origin, a challenge that has seen mixed results for peers such as Taco Bell and Domino’s.
