Chiquito de la Calzada documentary explores comedian's legacy and legal battles

A new documentary film presented at the San Sebastián Film Festival explores the legacy of the late Spanish comedian Chiquito de la Calzada (Gregorio Esteban Sánchez Fernández). The film, scheduled for release on Movistar Plus on October 1, utilizes a ‘true crime’ perspective to examine a significant legal dispute from the 1990s.

The documentary focuses on a lawsuit filed by the comedian against Pepe Navarro and Telecinco. The dispute arose when the television program ‘Esta noche cruzamos el Mississippi’ featured a character named Lucas Grijander, portrayed by Florentino Fernández, which the comedian claimed was an unauthorized imitation of his unique persona and linguistic style.

Chiquito de la Calzada was a central figure in Spanish television during the transition to private broadcasting, known for his surreal humor and the creation of a unique vocabulary that became a national phenomenon.
