Chirang protesters demand POCSO trial in minor's gang rape case

Protesters in the Chirang district of Assam staged demonstrations in Kajalgaon to demand justice following the gang rape of a minor tribal student. Various student and social organizations, including the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and the All Assam Tribal Sangha, held a sit-in to call for stringent legal action.

The demonstrators submitted a memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister and the Director General of Police, requesting that the three accused be tried under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Protesters also called for capital punishment, compensation for the victim’s family, and improved safety measures for students in the region.

Police have arrested three suspects: Nasirul Sheikh, Harunul Hasan, and Pir Mohammad. Authorities report that one suspect allegedly used a false identity to lure the Class 10 student to a room, where the assault occurred. It is further alleged that the incident was recorded and circulated on social media.
