Chirripó National Park seeks UNESCO Global Geopark status

Chirripó National Park is advancing its candidacy to become a UNESCO Global Geopark, a designation that would make it the first site in Costa Rica to receive such recognition. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), and the State University for Distance Education (UNED).

The project aims to integrate geological, cultural, and natural wealth to promote responsible tourism and sustainable development for local communities. To support this, the Chirripó Aspirant Geopark Commission recently held a strategic meeting with representatives from the UNESCO office in Costa Rica, local government, and various community organizations to evaluate the application status and define future steps.

To maintain the designation, which is valid for four years, the site must meet specific scientific and management criteria set by UNESCO. The current phase involves establishing sub-committees focused on geo-education and risk management at geological sites to ensure technical protection of the area's heritage.
