Chiu Feng-ying, DPP candidate for Xincheng Township, passes away

Chiu Feng-ying, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for township representative in the first constituency of Xincheng Township, Hualien County, has passed away.

On the evening of September 22, Chiu collapsed while preparing to deliver a speech at a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in Shun'an Village. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and performed CPR after finding her in a state of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Despite being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, the DPP Hualien County branch confirmed her death early on the morning of September 23.

Chiu, who moved from Taoyuan to Hualien over a decade ago, was running for local office to address local industry challenges and resource shortages. Her candidacy marked the first time the DPP had fielded a candidate in this specific constituency, which has historically been held by Kuomintang or independent candidates.
