Chlewnica waste plant fire involves 200 firefighters
A massive fire broke out at a waste management plant in Chlewnica, located in the Potęgowo municipality of Pomerania, Poland. The blaze, which began around 12:30 PM on Saturday, August 15, spread through four industrial halls covering approximately 5,000 square meters, an administrative building, and a large waste pile.
Over 200 firefighters and nearly 60 units were deployed to combat the flames. During the operation, seven firefighters required medical assistance due to heat exhaustion and other issues, though none required hospitalization. One volunteer firefighter was taken to the emergency department after spraining a leg.
Local authorities issued urgent warnings to residents of Potęgowo and surrounding areas, including Nowe Skórowo, Darżyno, and Darżynek, advising them to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid outdoor activities due to heavy smoke. The fire also impacted the local water supply, causing pressure drops and service interruptions in several municipalities to ensure sufficient water for firefighting efforts. Chemical rescue teams from Gdynia monitored air quality, though officials stated there was no immediate threat to public health.
