Chlorine poisoning risks and symptoms
Chlorine poisoning can occur through the inhalation of gas, ingestion of products, or skin and eye contact with concentrated chemicals. Exposure may result from industrial accidents, handling pool chemicals in poorly ventilated areas, or accidentally mixing household cleaners, such as combining bleach with acids or ammonia.
Symptoms can range from mild irritation to severe damage of the respiratory tract, lungs, digestive system, eyes, and skin. Because respiratory injuries may continue to develop even after a person reaches fresh air, prompt medical attention is necessary for persistent or worsening symptoms.
