Colombia experiences intense seismic activity in Chocó and Tolima
Colombia is experiencing heightened seismic activity, particularly in the departments of Chocó and Tolima. In Chocó, the municipality of Istmina has been the epicenter of multiple tremors, including a series of four earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.1 and 4.9 recorded in mid-September. This activity follows a major 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the region on August 10, 2026, which resulted in at least 335 deaths and over 4,500 injuries.
In the department of Tolima, specifically near Chaparral, a significant swarm of tremors has been reported. On September 21, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake caused preventive evacuations in buildings in Ibagué, including the Tolima Governor's office. This event was part of a larger sequence of dozens of smaller tremors recorded throughout the day in the region.
