Chocó region faces ecological recovery challenges after 7.4 magnitude earthquake

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the rural area of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department of Colombia. The Chocó region is home to significant biodiversity and strategic ecosystems, including the Los Katíos, Utria, and Tatamá national parks, as well as the Acandí Fauna and Flora Sanctuary and the Bajo Baudó mangrove reserve.

The Chocó Governor's office reported that 30 of the department's 31 municipalities have reported damage and victims following the August 10 event. The most affected areas include San José del Palmar, Tadó, Bagadó, Condoto, Nóvita, Sipí, Itsmina, and Litoral de San Juan.

Experts from the Universidad del Valle's Pacific Research Center emphasize the need for specialized ecological restoration strategies, noting that approximately 80% of the region's jungle area remains untouched by human activity. The area also includes the Darién jungle near the border with Panama.
