Chocolate consumption and weight management guidance

Chocolate can be included in a balanced diet without necessarily causing weight gain, provided it is consumed in moderation. Because chocolate is energy-dense—with 100 grams potentially exceeding 500 calories—the key to weight management lies in total daily caloric intake and portion control rather than the specific time of day it is eaten.

A practical portion size is approximately 10 to 20 grams, or one to two squares. While dark chocolate with a high cocoa percentage typically contains less sugar than milk chocolate, it is not necessarily lower in calories due to its fat content.

Dark chocolate offers several health benefits, including antioxidants, minerals, and bioactive substances. High cocoa content can provide cognitive stimulation through flavanols, heart protection via polyphenols, and mood improvement through tryptophan and theobromine. To maintain weight, it is advised not to compensate for chocolate consumption by skipping subsequent meals, but rather to return to normal eating habits.
