Chojnice residents protest modern building facade near medieval tower

A modernization project in Chojnice has sparked significant controversy among local residents and architects due to the aesthetic contrast between a newly renovated building and a nearby medieval prison tower. The renovated structure, which features a graphite-colored facade, stands adjacent to the historic brick tower, creating a stark visual difference.

Local conservationist Marlena Pawlak stated that the choice of a black facade was intentional, aiming to represent contemporary architecture that distinguishes itself from the old while still composing with the medieval urban fabric. Although the building underwent archaeological supervision and its documentation was submitted to the provincial conservator of monuments, no objections regarding the facade's color were raised during the process. The building, constructed during the interwar period, is not listed in the register of monuments. Following the renovation, the building's function will shift from service spaces to include residential apartments.
