Yangon faces cholera outbreak with hundreds hospitalized

An outbreak of cholera is spreading through Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. Since August 9, approximately 500 people have been hospitalized with severe diarrhea. Regional authorities reported that rapid tests identified 149 positive cases, with nine subsequently confirmed as Vibrio cholerae by the National Health Laboratory.

Health officials, including Dr. Nanda Win, noted that more than 180 people have been hospitalized in the city, with at least 93 testing positive at a single facility. Possible sources of the infection include contaminated water and takeaway street food, particularly in downtown areas such as Chinatown. While one 92-year-old man died after admission, authorities stated his death was due to pre-existing heart and lung conditions.

The outbreak occurs as Myanmar’s healthcare infrastructure remains in a critical state following over five years of civil war. Medical experts expressed concern that the disease could spread to regions with weaker healthcare services. Reports of cases have already emerged in Mon State among individuals returning from Yangon.
