Cholera outbreaks reported in Democratic Republic of the Congo
Multiple cholera outbreaks have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the Tshuapa province, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported six deaths and approximately forty suspected cases in the Bokungu health zone. The cases followed the arrival of a boat from Kinshasa, though a formal epidemiological link to the passengers has not yet been established. As a preventive measure, a local school has been temporarily closed for decontamination.
In the South Kivu province, the city of Baraka has officially declared a cholera epidemic, placing nearly 273,000 residents at risk. Local authorities in the Fizi health zone confirmed a surge in cases over the last two weeks. Officials attribute the rapid spread to poor access to potable water, inadequate sanitation, and waste management issues. An emergency plan is being implemented, including water chlorination, intensive cleaning of public spaces, and community hygiene sensitization.
