Kenscoff gang attack kills at least 30 people in Haiti FAST-MOVING

An armed gang attack in the Kenscoff commune, near Port-au-Prince, resulted in a significant loss of life during the night of August 23 to August 24, 2026. While official counts are difficult to finalize due to communication disruptions, Kenscoff Mayor Jean Massillon and rights group RNDDH report that at least 30 people were killed, with estimates potentially reaching 40. Between 15 and 20 residents were also reported injured.

The attackers, identified by local authorities as members of the Viv Ansanm gang coalition, targeted residential areas, a church serving as a shelter for displaced persons, and the home of prominent physician Dr. Jean 'Bill' Pape. The assault involved heavy gunfire and arson, with multiple homes and buildings set on fire.

The Haitian government has condemned the attack as a heinous act and announced the deployment of security reinforcements to Kenscoff to restore order. The incident occurs amid a broader security crisis in Haiti, where gangs control an estimated 70 percent of the capital's area and have displaced approximately 1.5 million people.
