Cholesterol management: Experts advise moderation of butter

Health experts suggest that individuals with high cholesterol do not necessarily need to eliminate butter entirely from their diet, but should instead focus on moderation and overall dietary patterns.

Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a professor at Tufts University, notes that while butter is high in saturated fats—which can increase LDL (bad) cholesterol—the primary concern is the total intake of these fats. Dietary cholesterol from foods like eggs and shellfish has a minimal impact on blood cholesterol levels for most people. Experts recommend limiting saturated fat to less than 10 percent of daily caloric intake, which equates to approximately 13 grams for a 2,000-calorie diet.

To manage cholesterol levels, especially after age 50, health professionals recommend increasing the consumption of unsaturated fats found in fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. Replacing butter with olive oil and incorporating soluble fiber through oats, legumes, and whole grains are also effective strategies. Regular physical activity, such as 30 minutes of daily movement, and routine blood testing are advised to monitor health status.
