Choluteca police evict 84 peasant families from El Tulito

More than 200 police officers, including riot control units, carried out an eviction of 84 peasant families from the El Tulito community in the Choluteca department of Honduras. The operation, executed on August 6, 2026, affected approximately 516 individuals who relied on the land for cultivating valeriana to support their livelihoods.

Human rights organizations have raised concerns regarding the legality and humanitarian impact of the move. Defenses for the families claim there was an absence of effective notification prior to the eviction and that the measure proceeded despite an urgent injunction (recurso de amparo) filed to suspend the action.

The legal dispute involves allegations of land usurpation regarding property belonging to La Compañía Cañera del Sur and Empresa Agrícola Los Destellos S. A. de C. V. While the Public Ministry has been investigating the matter since 2019, rights defenders argue the eviction may be a result of the Agroindustrial Protection Law, which they claim favors large-scale investors and agro-industrial interests over local communities.
