Chongos Bajo: Historic churches remain roofless months after earthquake

More than three months after an earthquake on July 18, the historic churches of Chongos Bajo remain without roofs or technical damage assessments. The Matriz Church, which is over 460 years old, has suffered a roof collapse, leaving ancient wooden altars and religious paintings exposed to rain and sunlight.

Local community members report that the Ministry of Culture and the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) of Junín have not provided results regarding structural damage evaluations or technical profiles detailing restoration costs. In response to the lack of official progress, residents formed the Committee for the Restoration and Protection of the Temple.

The committee is organizing local fundraising efforts, such as community meals, to finance a provisional cover for the ten altars in the Matriz Church. This immediate intervention is estimated to cost approximately 30,000 soles, covering materials such as wood, beams, and 168 sheets of corrugated metal. The Copon Church also requires a protective cover, though at a lower cost due to its smaller size.
