Chongqing and Sichuan face severe flooding and landslide risks
Heavy rainfall and torrential storms have caused significant flooding and geological risks across Chongqing and Sichuan provinces. In Chongqing, several districts including Chengkou, Wuxi, and Kaizhou experienced heavy to torrential rain, with some areas recording maximum rainfall of 215 mm.
In Chengkou County, the disaster has affected over 4,000 people, resulting in damaged or collapsed housing, destroyed crops, and significant infrastructure damage to roads and fiber optic cables. Local reports indicate that river levels in several rivers, including the Panhe and Pingba rivers, rose by 4 meters, exceeding warning levels. Residents have also reported issues regarding unannounced water releases from local reservoirs.
In neighboring Sichuan province, heavy rains led to widespread flooding in Dazhou, where entire towns and local police stations were submerged. Meteorological authorities have issued warnings for continued rain and high risks of secondary disasters, such as landslides and mudflows, particularly in northeastern Chongqing due to high soil moisture levels.
