Chongqing: A key hub for China's industrial transformation
Chongqing, a Chinese municipality with 32 million inhabitants, has emerged as a central pillar of the nation's economic and technological transformation. Covering 82,400 square kilometers, it is the largest municipality in the world by land area and serves as a vital industrial hub in southwest China.
The city is a major manufacturing center, hosting 39 of China's 41 largest industries and all 31 primary manufacturing categories. It is particularly prominent in the automotive sector, housing 19 vehicle manufacturers and over 1,200 auto parts companies, with a significant focus on electric vehicle production and charging infrastructure. Other key sectors include aerospace, nuclear technology, naval industry, and military equipment.
Strategically located along the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing plays a critical role in the New Silk Road. Its multimodal logistics network—integrating highways, high-speed rail, and river transport—facilitates trade between Asia, Europe, and Russia. Since being designated a “national” city in 1997, it has been a primary recipient of central government development policies.
