Chongqing coordinates disaster response after landslide and flood

The State Council of China established a special investigation and assessment group for the July 17 landslide in Pengshui County, Chongqing, which caused heavy casualties. Led by Wang Kun, director of the Ministry of Emergency Management and head of the China Earthquake Administration, the group includes the Ministry of Natural Resources, Public Security, Housing and Urban‑Rural Development, Transport, the Meteorological Administration and the Chongqing municipal government. Its first plenary meeting was held on August 4, where members reviewed investigation plans, pledged to follow central directives and set up a hotline for public reports.

Separately, the Chongqing Defense District responded to a severe rainstorm that struck Yongchuan District, deploying troops and militia to clear damaged roads, locate missing residents and conduct rescue operations using excavators, drones and life‑detection equipment. The district also used the incident to reinforce military training and political education, emphasizing realistic combat readiness, improved disaster‑relief capabilities and stricter oversight of training standards.
