A massive landslide struck Pengshui County in Chongqing, southwestern China on 17 July 2026, burying dozens of residential and commercial buildings. Initial reports listed 11 deaths and about 50 missing. After DNA testing, rescue crews recovered 30 additional bodies, raising the confirmed death toll to 41. Subsequent searches brought the total to 51 fatalities with 10 people still unaccounted for. The slide measured roughly 60 m long, 30 m high and 10 m thick, displacing about 18 000 m³ of rock and earth. Over 800 rescue personnel cleared thousands of tonnes of debris and evacuated roughly 1 100 residents from the danger zone. The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management pledged 50 million yuan (≈ 6.5 million €) for humanitarian aid, temporary shelter and reconstruction. President Xi Jinping called for scientific search‑and‑rescue operations and for measures to prevent secondary disasters.
