A massive landslide struck Pengshui County in Chongqing, China on 17 July 2026, burying multiple residential and commercial buildings. Chinese authorities later confirmed that 30 additional bodies were recovered, raising the confirmed death total to 41. DNA testing was used to identify the newly found victims, while earlier figures on 28 July had listed 11 dead and about 50 missing.

Rescue teams comprising over 800 personnel have cleared thousands of tonnes of rock and earth and have evacuated roughly 1,100 residents from the affected area. The slide was estimated at about 60 m long, 30 m high and 10 m thick, with a volume of roughly 18,000 m³. The disaster follows a separate landslide in Gansu province less than two weeks earlier that killed 21 people and buried 33.

President Xi Jinping called for scientific search and rescue operations and for measures to prevent secondary disasters. The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management allocated 50 million yuan (≈6.5 million euros) for humanitarian aid, temporary shelter and reconstruction.
