Chongqing landslide kills 51, 10 still missing
A large landslide struck Pengshui County in Chongqing municipality on July 17, burying more than ten residential buildings and a minibus. Authorities have confirmed 51 deaths and 10 people remain missing.
More than 1,100 residents were evacuated and rescue teams deployed over 1,080 personnel, 2,300 pieces of equipment, divers, underwater robots and dredging vessels to search the Wujiang River. Ten people were injured, three of whom have been released from hospital. Land‑search operations concluded after 325 hours; water‑search efforts continue. Traffic in the affected area is expected to resume soon as cleanup and reconstruction begin.
