Chongqing recognized as the world's largest city by population
Chongqing is considered the world’s largest city by population, with approximately 32 million residents living within its official administrative boundaries. This massive figure is partly due to the city's unique administrative structure; its territory is roughly the size of Austria and includes both densely populated urban areas and vast rural regions.
Following its designation as a municipality directly under the central government in 1997, Chongqing has transformed from an industrial town into a major megacity. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, the city has become a vital economic, industrial, and transportation hub, connecting China's hinterland to other major economic zones.
