Chongqing revitalizes historic alleys through urban renewal

Chongqing is undergoing a city renewal drive aimed at restoring 200 historic alleys by 2027. This initiative has transformed once-neglected lanes into popular destinations for both residents and tourists, offering local culture, snacks, and traditional architecture.

In the Qianjiang District, the Qifang Qixiang historic quarter—a former trading hub where ancient salt and courier routes met—drew over 300,000 visitors during the National Day holiday. The restoration project preserved traditional gray brick and tiled roof architecture while upgrading essential underground infrastructure.

In the Nan'an District, the Houbao community on the banks of the Yangtze River has also seen increased interest, with visitors frequenting its coffee shops, bookshops, and hotpot restaurants.
