Choosing Between SPF 30 and SPF 50 Sunscreens in Romania
Sunscreen labels stating SPF 30 or SPF 50 indicate the proportion of UVB rays blocked compared with unprotected skin. SPF 30 filters about 97 % of UVB radiation, while SPF 50 blocks roughly 98 %. The extra 1 % is valuable for people with very fair skin, freckles, rosacea, or those using photosensitising treatments, and for children whose skin is more vulnerable. However, the amount applied is more decisive than the number: a generous, regularly reapplied SPF 30 can protect better than a thinly applied SPF 50 left on the skin for hours.
Dermatologists recommend SPF 30 as the minimum for everyday use for all skin types, provided it is applied liberally and re‑applied at least every two hours. SPF 50 is advised when the user is prone to burning, when sun exposure is prolonged (e.g., beach, mountain sports), or when correct application cannot be guaranteed. Broad‑spectrum products protecting against both UVB (causing burns) and UVA (driving premature ageing) are essential year‑round, even on cloudy days or through car windows.
